Dear parents,
My name is Mr. Herrera and I am very pleased to be your child’s Social Studies teacher this year. I grew up in Wood Dale, Illinois with a family of 4. I have one older brother and one younger brother. I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2015 with a bachelor’s in secondary education and an endorsement in Spanish. I am looking forward to an exciting year. It is my goal to provide all of my students with an educationally challenging, yet fun, experience in my classroom. I have high expectations for your child and I will do all that I can to help your child achieve those expectations.
I will be expecting all work assigned in class to be completed. I understand all children do not work at the same pace. It is important to remember that all successes, big or small, are meaningful. Each child will progress at his or her own rate, developing skills when he or she is ready. Maintaining each child’s self-esteem and building a secure and respectful environment for growth will always remain one of the priorities in our classroom. I am asking for your help to preserve those expectations by checking with your son/daughter regularly to make sure that his/her work is being completed. Throughout the year, your child will be working on many activities that will help him or her learn new concepts and skills. Please take some time to review some of these activities and projects with your child.
I have become very aware of the impact teachers can have on the lives of their students. As students start school, they spend a lot of hours and that is why I believe that frequent home and school communication is vital. I hope that this letter can be the basis for a great deal of interaction and communication between us. We can discuss about what is happening in our classrooms, ways you can support your child’s learning at home, and ways that I can extended what you do at home in school. Also it will be helpful if you can tell me what should I know about your son or daughter. This would help me to know your child better and I will not share this information with anyone, unless you give permission to do so. I hope that that this ongoing dialogue leads to a great year.
Finally, I want you to know that I am always available to answer any questions and concerns. Please do not hesitate in contacting me via e-mail or phone. My e-mail is [email protected] and you can reach me by phone at (630)-542-2659. I can wait to meet you and your child and have a fantastic year.
Sincerely,
Mr. Herrera

Dear Student,
Hello! My name is Mr. Herrera, and I will be your Social Studies teacher this year. I am very excited that you will be in my class this year. I can’t wait to share new experiences with you throughout the year. Before school starts I wanted to write and tell you a little about myself and our classroom. I grew up in Wood Dale, Illinois with a family of 4. I have one older brother and one younger brother. I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2015 with a bachelor’s in secondary education and an endorsement in Spanish.
Our classroom is going to be a busy, but fun place to learn. Your help will be needed throughout the school year, so having good communication is essential. The environment of our classroom is structured by a variety of hands-on-learning activities, projects, and your participation. We are going to have a variety of assignments and projects that will enrich your education and will help me gauge your understanding of the material. My goal as a teacher is to guide you through the learning and making this year material challenging, yet fun.
Communication for me is essential, so if you have any question, concerns, or just want to talk to me, my door is always open for you. I will try to come in early to school or stay a few hours after school to help you with whatever you need. You can also visit our class website for homework updates, helpful resources and to see everything that we are doing. Please feel free to contact me at school by email ([email protected]), or call me at school through my school phone number. I welcome your thought and I am looking forward to working together and to make this year a successful year.
Sincerely
Mr. Herrera
Rationale
For the two letter I decided to use both formal and informal language. I used more of formal language in the parent letter, since parents want to see that the person that will be teaching their child is serious and capable. I structured the letter by first introducing myself and giving them some background information about me. Then I talk about my expectations for my students and ways they can help me and their child in their education process. I continue by showing how important it is to be a teacher and the things I would do to all that I can to help their child achieve those expectations. In my letter to the parents I included a part were I ask them to tell me something about their child that I should know. I included this because parents can help me in knowing students even more (Cushmar & Rodgers, 155).
For the letter to my students I used informal language and more of a relax tone. I used almost the same structure as the parent letter, with information about me, things about our classroom and some of my goals, and ways of communication. I decided to keep this letter short, since I feel that students would not enjoy a long letter from their teacher before schools starts.
