Student Expectations:
- If you need to use the pencil sharpener or anything in room you can get up without asking permission, but do not disrupt the class.
Participation
o Participating in class is crucial for your understanding
o The more you participate the better it would be for your grade
o There would be a lot of group work and contributing to your group is vital.
Absent and Make-up Work
·End of class
o I will give you 2 minutes at the end of class to pack your things and wrap up the lesson.
Teacher Expectations:
· Enforcement
o If you do not have your bathroom passes you would have to wait until next semester for new ones.
o If you come to class without your materials and late to class, you will receive a verbal warning.
-two verbal warning will lead to a detention
o 3 tardies = a detention
· Grading
o I would be providing rubrics for the written assignments and projects.
o The grading will be based on how well you followed the instructions of the rubric.
Grading Scale:
100-90=A
89-80= B
79-70= C
69-60= D
59 and below= F
Rationale
Above are the policies and procedures that I will enforce in my classroom. At the beginning of each year I will present these policies so students know my expectations. These policies will be posted in the classroom along with the classroom rules, so students are constantly reminded of the policies and I can refer to them as issues arise. I have also posted the teacher expectations, since it's crucial for a teacher to model the expected behavior to students (AFT, Classroom Procedures). I plan on going over my procedures in the classroom, but not go into to much detail since it can overwhelmed the students and I do not want my students to think that they have no saying in the classroom.
I decided to give my students 6 bathroom passes, so they can get a break from the class. I understand that students can be stressed or just need a break, so they will be allowed to use these passes to step out of the classroom for 2-3 minutes. If the students want to get materials or sharpen their pencils they can get up without asking permission. The students will have that responsibility and I hope that they can learn to be respectful of the classroom and to not disrupt the teacher or their classmates.
One thing that I am most concerned is the absent and make-up work. I decided to use the strategy that was mention in Emmer and Evert, in which its recommended to put the day and the name of the student in the assignment, and place it in a cabinet that is specific to absent work (Emmer and Evert, 34). At the same time the student is responsible of checking that cabinet for their work, and I hope that students become use to just going straight to the cabinet instead of the teacher.
For my grading strategies I decided to create rubrics for the assignments with clear expectations and what students need to do in their assignments. By doing this, they would know what I am looking for and the evaluation process. It also makes it easier for the students to see what I expect of their work. Finally, I kept my grading scale simple and pretty normal.
